Dye Classes
Note: All of my classes are available to be scheduled for private lessons or in small groups of 2-6 as described below. These classes can also be taught to small or larger groups (with modifications) at another location. For example, I’ve taught at the kitchen at Howard County Fairgrounds, and church kitchens. In addition, my single-pot burners can be brought to other locations, so I have taught and given demonstrations at yarn stores and meeting halls. Dye with Logwood, Indigo and Osage…..Purples, Blues, Yellows, and Greens.
In this 3 1/2 hour class you will learn about mordants, logwood, indigo, and osage. You will dye yarn in purple, blue, and yellow and Green. Included in the handouts is information about the dyes and the techniques we use. You do not need to bring anything except perhaps an apron if you like. I will provide dye pots, gloves, dye material, equipment, yarn, and ziplock bags to take home the yarn you dye. I will have everything prepared for you ahead of time, including mordanting the yarn we will dye that day.
The class includes 5-50g hanks of yarn which you will dye and take home. You may choose the weight of yarn for the class, Fingering or Worsted. First, you will dye the yarn in 4 solids: 1 purple made with logwood, 1 blue one made with indigo, 1 yellow made with osage and 1 green made with indigo and osage. Then we’ll use that knowledge and make 1 multi-colored hank! If you are interested in dyeing fleece, I can also provide you with some fleece to dye and take home at no extra cost.

Dye with Roots and Bugs, Orange, Yellow, and Pink- Plus Yellow
In this 3 12 hour class you will learn about mordants, madder root, cochineal, and lac. You will dye orange, pink, red/maroon, and yellow. Plus one multi-colored. Included in the handouts is information about the dyes and the techniques we use. You do not need to bring anything except perhaps an apron if you like. I will provide dye pots, gloves, dye material, equipment, yarn, and ziplock bags to take home the yarn you dye. I will have everything prepared for you ahead of time, including mordanting the yarn we will dye that day.

If you’re already comfortable with lace knitting and don’t want to join the lace class, only sign up for part 1. The Bell Flower Scarf pattern is a beginner lace project. The pattern will be included in the dye class as well as in the lace class.
If you are only interested in just the lace/scarf lesson, only sign up for part 2. For that you will need to bring your own 250g-300g of worsted weight yarn, in a gradient set or not. It can be knit with 1 color or multiple colors!
If lace is new or fairly new to you, AND you want to dye the yarn, sign up for both.
Description of Part 1:
This class will take 2-3 hours, depending on which gradient set you choose. At the end of that time you will take home your yarn for a final rinse, then let let it dry overnight. If you sign up for part 2, bring the yarn back for the lace knitting class. The yarn used is worsted weight. You can dye shades of one color or multiple colors. Materials provided: 5 or 6 50g hanks of worsted weight yarn, dye materials

Dye and Knit and Easy Lace Scarf Part 2

Description of Part 2:
Now that you have your gradient set, (or are bringing your own yarn) it’s time to knit the scarf! In this class you will learn this 16 row lace. Since all the purl rows are “Purl each stitch,” it’s really only 8 rows that you have to learn! I will show you how to read a lace pattern, estimate the amount of yarn needed for a color change, and how to execute a 2-4-4-2 color change. Together we will cast on, and knit the first 16 row lace pattern. Then we will plan for the color changes (if you are using more than one color) and bind off at the end.
The pattern is included in this class, but please bring your own size 8 needle, either straight needles or double pointed needles 16-32 inches in length approximately.
You should be comfortable with knitting and purling before taking this class. But I will show you the K2tog increase and SSK increase, plus yarnovers, and anything else you need to know for this pattern and most other lace patterns.
Class will take 3 hours.

Spend a Year with a Designer
This is a monthly class that you can participate in partially or for the whole year. Below is the where and when and a description of knitting plan for each month. Including one dye class!
2nd Wednesday of every month from 1-3pm. Class will be at my home in Highland, MD. I will send you the exact address and driving directions when you register.

Knitting or Crocheting in the Rhythm of the Rosary
At the Knitting or Crocheting class, you will learn to pray the Catholic Rosary while you knit or crochet to the rhythm of the prayers in the Rosary. In the first hour, you’ll learn an eye-popping bobble, and the technique of knitting or crocheting WITH the prayers in a unique way. With this pattern, each person’s project will look different, because the stitches and bobbles reflect your speed and YOUR rhythm of praying. After learning the techniques, we’ll spend time praying one entire Rosary, making a project suitable for either being it’s own finished object or the beginning of a larger one.
Class length: 3 hours
Materials provided: 2 worsted weight 50g hanks yarn in contrasting colors, one for the border and one for the main knitting. Also included are removable stitch markers and the pattern.
Please bring knitting needles or crochet hooks, needle size 8.
Must know how to knit and purl or crochet singles and doubles.
Price: $120

Learn to Continental Knit and Purl
In 3- 90 minute classes, you will learn all you need to know for the foundations of knitting in the Continental method of knitting and purling. (Working yarn in the left hand.) You can begin this method as a complete beginner, OR learn it new as a “thrower” or American style. I will use a pattern I wrote which include 14 different stitch patterns called “Sassy Summer Scarf.” Included is 100g of worsted weight wool.
Session 1: The continental knit stitch. This technique has you holding the working yarn in your left hand. It’s a wonderfully ergonomic way to knit which is a nice change from other ways of knitting.
Session 2: A week later when you have knit 30-50 rows of knitting every row, we’ll build on that skill, and I will teach you to purl. It’s a more challenging skill so you’ll want to bring your patience. It will be worth it all though when you learn to rib and do other knit stitches that involve knits and purls in the same row.
Session 3: A week later when you have knit and purled 30-50 more rows, we’ll build on that skill and learn to knit ribbing and other stitches.
Class will be limited to 4 people.

Learn to Knit and Purl, Cast on, Increase and Decrease
In 3 90 minutes sessions, you will learn all you need for the foundations of knitting using the American style or “throwing” method of knitting and purling. (Working yarn in the right hand.)
Included is a 100g hank of yarn and beginner knitting needles, and a PATTERN that includes knits, purls, and various stitch patterns.
Session 1: The knit stitch and casting on. After you learn the wonderful knit stitch, I will teach you a simplified version of the Long Tail Cast-On which anyone can do once you know the knit stitch. It sounds a little backwards, but that’s OK. I’ll cast on for you, and you will knit some rows. Then I’ll show you how to cast-on and you will practice that.
Session 2: A week later when you have knit 30-50 rows of knitting every row, we’ll build on that skill, and I will teach you to purl. Along with that, you will learn some new vocabulary in knitting. We will also practice your cast-on
Session 3: A week later when you have knit and purled 30-50 more rows, we’ll build on that skill and learn to decrease and increase. These 4 skills, knitting, purling, increasing, and decreasing provide the basics of all knit stitches and patterns. Depending on what you are comfortable with, I can teach you some easy stitch patterns like ribbing and basket weave.
Class size is limited to 4 people.
