Picot Edge Worked in

Day 2 Progress on Naomi’s Sweater:

My goal on Naomi’s sweater is to knit 2 inches a day, so I can finish the main body of the sweater in a week. Here’s how it looks after 2 days:

first 2 days of knitting

first 2 days of knittingFor those of you who have knit dozens of these picot edges, you might be wondering how/why did I hem the edge already?  It’s because I decided to try something new.  After knitting many projects sporting picot edges, I wondered: was there as way, to hem the picot edge WHILE AT THE SAME TIME knitting that first row of darker purple?  Turns out there is!

I tried at first to simply pick up the bottom edge, but that was too tedious.  Then I tried a technique similar to the 3-needle bind off.

Here first is the picot edge knitted and ready to be folded.

To begin this new technique, I threaded a size 1 needle through the 163 cast-on stitches. (If you look carefully, you can see the needle threaded through the cast on.)

Then I folded the edging along that natural fold- so as to bring the ends together, the needles together. After that it was simply a matter of very carefully knitting that first row of dark purple, inserting the working needle into both stitches at once.

Any questions?

It took took careful, patient effort to knit that row, but now it’s done and I love it.  Has anyone else done this?
